Why Republicans ?Although Bush took an oath to uphold the Constitution, he has violated every important Constitutional principle. The framers of the Constitution strongly rejected concentration of power, yet Bush has sought to consolidate all power in the Presidency. He has used this power in what are unquestionably criminal activities. He has been untiring in his service to corporations, most destructively in concentration of media. A government by and for corporations is, by definition, fascist. The Constitution rejects the notion of a king. Yet Bush republicans, like neocon Krauthammer, assure us that we now have one. The Constitution does not include the 'two party system, but it is clear that a single strong party can destroy the 'checks and balances' that we thought we had. Bush has not been held accountable for any of the catastrophes for which he was responsible. The Constitution makes the Congress the legislative body, yet Bush has used signing statements to alter the law to suit his personal wishes. The Congress has not done effective oversight of the Bush administration. The Constitution gives the Congress the power to make war, yet that has been usurped by the President. Unfortunately he has not been wise. The Constitution includes protections for everyone in the form of the Bill of Rights, yet Bush has gone to great lengths to make law-free zones and to treat some as outside the law. Habeas Corpus has been called into question, and torture seems now to be public policy. The Constitution sets out the duties of the federal government clearly, but the neocons (check Grover Norquist's book 'leave us alone') seek to remove broad functionality including the provision to 'promote the general welfare'. This provides them with a mandate to spend profligately on the military-industrial complex, to wage unprovoked wars, and to build empire, and to ignore the Constitution itself. Although Bush rhetoric includes the word 'democracy' a lot, he uses it only in an Orwellian sense. When Republicans use the word 'reform', they mean destroy. As in their wish to 'reform' the UN. The majority of Americans do not agree with the Bush agenda. This is not democracy. See the Articles of Impeachment that are now before the Judiciary Committee. Bush Republicans are fiscally irresponsibleIt is clear that the financial pillars of the US are buckling. This is a consequence of huge trade deficits, federal deficits (they didn't bother to pay for the war), nonsensical tax cuts, mindless privatization, idiotic deregulation, and deeply corrupt tactics. The next generation will find that Republicans have left them in deep debt, without healthcare, eldercare, social programs. It is only because of vigorous opposition that we may preserve Social Security for them. Republicans do not honor the Declaration of Human RightsPeople are remarkably complacent that our government tortures, engages in renditions, and has the highest rate of incarceration in the world. Congress passed the Military Commissions Act in September 2006 which allows the President to declare anyone an "unlawful enemy combatant". to deny court review for prisoners who are not US citizens revoking the 800 year old right to habeas corpus that is enshrined in the US Constitution, to prohibit any person from invoking the Geneva Conventions as a source of rights in any US court, and guts the War Crimes Act, giving immunity to civilians who ordered or tolerated the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere since 9/11. Violations of the Geneva Conventions are no longer criminal offenses under US law. The right to form a union is one of the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In other countries, unions have managed to serve workers welfare much better than here in the US. They have universal healthcare, better wages, and better social programs. Since Ronald Reagan, union busting has been US policy. Republicans do not respect International LawThe Neocons have only contempt for international law. Although th US was one of the architects of the International Criminal Court, it has refused to be bound by it and has not signed on to it. Republicans have been rigging electionsOur CIA does it in many countries, it was just a matter of time before they did it here. See elections. Republicans have been waging war on ScienceIn broaching the wall that is supposed to separate Church and State, Republicans have been in denial that the science is in on global warming. Education will be second class as a result. The condition of the earth bequeathed to next generation is in doubt. Republicans think the only proper use of government is for war.Grover Norquist is one of the main exponents of this view. Republicans favor secrecySee Secrecy. SummaryRepublicans are corrupt, fascist, warmongering, empire-building, human-rights abusing, yet incompetent public administrators who, given the chance, will complete the destruction of the US empire. Like the Nazis, they do not care if they destroy the people of the US as well, only that they fight to the end. As part of their weird, medieval religion, and their dream of world domination, they fully expect complete destruction in Armageddon. Technology has made possible the complete destruction of the earth. Republicans appear determined to make it so. Online petition - Freedom House: Stop Pretending America is Free (12/2007) |
